Biography Of Bill Cunningham

“The World is Moving Faster, Can Materials Keep Up?”

May 2007

Change is happening at an enormous pace. Changes in technology, process, competition, and customer requirements are fast and never ending. More interestingly, the pace of change is accelerating. Is it really true that knowledge doubles every ten years? Think of how far we have come and it makes sense, but then think ahead to what it will bring. Imagine the possibilities. On top of the change the world continues to shrink. No longer can we only worry about customers and competitors in our own block, we need to worry globally. We can buy product anywhere, find customers anywhere, and the competition is everywhere. While you are sleeping, your competition on the other side of the globe is working and maybe they are a partner of your competitor down the street. Are you worried?

With all this accelerating change and around the clock activities comes need for more features, more choices, and more variety of any products you make. No longer do customers buy even close to what the factory wants to make, choices are near infinite.

If you are planning materials and production how do you keep up? Is it important that you do keep up? You had better believe it is important. Your ability to meet and stay ahead in this faced paced world will determine whether you and your company make it. The ability to meet customer needs quickly with all the features they want is up to you. How you control investment and cost for your business in this world is up to you. Can your factory have a chance of meeting their delivery and cost goals without your inputs to their process being at peak performance?

Provide supply that gets you there before your competitor with more choices. Don’t react, be proactive. Develop a model that is flexible. Don’t wait for change to happen, drive it. Spend time on continually moving your model forward; don’t just do “the job.” Create a decision making process that is fast and truly empower people to make decisions. Do not be caught watching the paint dry.
